Jeff Chapman ’61 Gives Back with Lifetime and Legacy Gifts to Webb

Jeff Chapman ’61

Jeff Chapman ’61 embodies the lifelong impact of a Webb School education. As a student, he excelled in the classroom, served as class president, and was a starter on the football team. But Jeff’s connection to Webb didn’t end with his graduation—it became a cornerstone of his remarkable academic career and personal legacy.

After graduating from Webb, Jeff pursued higher education with distinction, earning an under-graduate degree at Yale and advanced degrees from Brown University and the University of North Carolina. From 1965 to 1971 he returned to Webb as a teacher of anthropology and his-tory, inspiring the next generation of students with his passion for learning.

Jeff’s career continued to flourish as a research professor and director of the Frank H. McClung Museum at the University of Tennessee. He gained national recognition for his groundbreaking research and teaching on the Native American populations of the Tennessee Valley. Despite these achievements, Jeff’s dedication to Webb School remained steadfast. Over the years he has served on the Webb Board of Trustees and in 2002 was honored with the prestigious Rob-ert Webb Award for his extraordinary service to the school. His connection to Webb extends across generations—both his daughters and grandchildren have attended the school.

“Webb gave me the academic foundation on which I was able to build my career,” Jeff shared. “While I am grateful for the start that Webb gave me, I am so glad to have had a career in which I could pass on the academic lessons that I learned as a student and teacher at Webb to another generation.”

Jeff’s commitment to giving back is as enduring as his connection to Webb. He and his family have been generous supporters of the Webb Fund and the school’s capital campaigns for many years. Now, through a planned gift, Jeff has ensured that his support for Webb will continue for generations to come.

“Through my own experiences with Webb as a student, faculty member, trustee, and parent, I was able to see firsthand the impact of a Webb education,” he explained. “I am excited to know that I will be able to continue to help Webb in the future through the bequest in my will.”

Jeff Chapman’s story is a testament to the transformative power of a Webb education and the enduring legacy of those who give back. His planned gift will help sustain the academic excel-lence and opportunities that defined his own life, ensuring that future generations of Webb students can thrive.
